Entrepreneurial Teaser Video
We talked more and more often about the skills students will need to succeed in the future. Often times these surround technology, communication or collaboration skills. We don’t often think about the skills needed to be successful as a self-starter or freelancer.
According to this Inc. post 27 million working-age Americans, almost 14%, are starting or running new businesses. Our students will need these entrepreneurial skills to flourish in the workplace even if they don’t start their own businesses. We are working at an initiative to bring an entrepreneurial track to Oakridge to address this gap.
To promote the concept for this initiative I have made a short video. Even the process of making this video modeled the skills we want our students to acquire. I initially came up with a rough outline that included a Keynote presentation that I voiced over and a few video clips I downloaded from YouTube. I threw them together in Adobe Premiere and took it to one of my colleagues. I then showed her the very rough draft of my idea. She proceeded to “tear it apart” or “gave me some constructive criticism” depending on how you think about it 🙂. While nothing is exactly like the rough draft, about 60% of my original is in the final version albeit in a different order. I even enlisted the help of some of our students who do this daily to capture some video for me.
As I look back on the experience I undertook to make this short (1:17) video, I think of all the skills I had to employ and wish school was more like this process.
- identify a problem to solve
- research my material
- relearn how to download videos from YouTube
- create a rough draft in Adobe Premiere which required asking some questions since I hadn’t worked in Premiere itself although I had other video creation experience
- be humble and ask a critical friend’s opinion to improve my rough draft
- iterate my video in order to make a better product
- ask for an expert’s help in filming (even if it was someone less than half my age)
I hope you enjoy the video I (we) made to hopefully get people excited about entrepreneurism.

Research
I wanted to use some examples of companies that were very successful but relatively new. I did a couple searches and found this article which I used for the information at the beginning of the video.

I wanted to use a stat about how many jobs will be new in the next few years and found the 65% stat in this article.
